What Can You Do If You Think You May Be Depressed?

If you suspect that you or your friend or family member might be depressed there are a number of strategies that I would recommend.

GET A PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

If you think you might be depressed, this would be a good time to have an overall physical examination and lab tests. If you do not have a primary care physician, ask your friends to recommend someone, or check with your insurance company to learn which doctors are in your network. Tell your doctor that you have been feeling down and describe in detail what you are experiencing.

The symptoms of thyroid disease mimic the symptoms of depression and can be easily mistaken for depression. Ask your doctor to check your thyroid hormone levels, since the thyroid is the most common medical cause of depression and any imbalance can be corrected if the thyroid is found to be either overactive or underactive. Thyroid function tests are not routinely ordered by most primary care physicians, so make sure this test is included in your lab work. If thyroid disease is present but is not discovered, other treatments for depression are unlikely to work. Other diseases such as anemia can mimic depression as well and may need to be treated directly.
